How to improve teaching American History

Today, I took my AP US History class to the computer lab to investigate their family history.  To find out what their surname means, and look for the immigrant in their family tree if they can find it.
I have a class of about 13 students, the majority of the students participated in the project.  I had four who thought it was  something to laugh  about instead of doing the assignment.  We are near the last days of the school and student's motivation has really began to disappear.  They only want to talk and have fun.

I have used this project before with my students, and the projects usually is a great activity.  Trying to get them to understand history is more than a TEXTBOOK, and that living history is their family tree.  For many people finding their family tree or history is an interesting hobby.
